medicinal plants unit

I am currently working on a science unit, featuring medicinal plants and trees. So far I made a power point presentation with 12-13 plants and trees that my CT and I have selected. I also plan on making little booklets with write up (kid friendly) on the selected plants and trees, in these books, there will be pictures of the plants, and box where the student sketches their view about the plant/tree. For the art link of this unit: students will be drawing, and painting pictures of their favourite plant/tree, will try a variety of ways to draw their pictures using pastels on dark colored paper. I will be looking for hands on activities to make this unit interesting. I look forward to my practicum this fall. During the school wide hike, the students in the class I am working in, will be looking for the selected plants and trees for their plant books. After the unit is almost over, my CT and I will be making labrador tea and bannock for the students as the end of the medicinal plant/tree unit.

  1. When you have them draw the plants, you are working on both science and art - developing observation skills. The criteria for the drawing should be accuracy when compared to the plant itself, i.e. how the leaves grow, how many together, etc. Ask the students to use what they have learned about the plant through this close observation to make their pastel pictures as well. In this case, they can alter the size, arrangement, or colour but try to stay true to the shapes of the plant as observed. Just some ideas for you to consider, to be sure that both science and art outcomes are emphasized in your integrated unit.
